Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to operate glass finishing and ancillary equipment. It applies to finishing processes for any glass product in both large production and smaller craft contexts. This unit applies to operators who are required to take responsibility for own outputs and follow established procedures to set up, operate, monitor and adjust the equipment and undertake changeovers. Operators are also required to work autonomously and apply their own judgement to interpret information; monitor processes; identify and address routine and non-routine problems and control hazards.This unit applies to an individual working alone or as part of a team or group and in liaison with other shift team members, team leader and supervisor. No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare the glass finishing equipment for production
- 1.1 Set up line and equipment in accordance with job specifications
- 1.2 Transfer glass to conveyor
- 1.3 Conduct pre-start-up procedures and visual checks according to enterprise procedure checklist
- 1.4 Set up and configure finishing equipment and materials to ensure start-up function complies with standard operating procedures
- 1.5 Load and separate glass
2. Operate and monitor glass finishing equipment
- 2.1 Identify customer requirements and set minimum parameters
- 2.2 Start up and operate glass finishing equipment in accordance with established enterprise procedures and work instructions
- 2.3 Monitor equipment performance
- 2.4 Monitor product for non-conformance to customer specifications
- 2.5 Adjust and control equipment and material to ensure correct product quality
- 2.6 Complete final inspection checks
- 2.7 Complete appropriate records and logs
3. Shut down equipment
- 3.1 Ensure line and equipment is clear of all product and left in a safe manner for shutdown
- 3.2 Shut down equipment and complete appropriate records and logs
4. Rectify routine problems
- 4.1 Identify and rectify faults and equipment failure
- 4.2 Maintain records and log books of equipment operations
- 4.3 Identify non-routine problems and report to designated person
5. Control hazards
- 5.1 Identify glass finishing hazards
- 5.2 Assess the risks arising from those hazards
- 5.3 Implement measures to control those risks
- 5.4 Shut down equipment in an emergency
