Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to carry out feedlot operations.The unit applies to individuals who carry out feedlot operations under broad direction and take responsibility for their own work.The unit applies to corporate, small scale or opportunity lot feeding of cattle, sheep and goats.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace, and animal welfare legislation, regulations, standards and guidelines, and sustainability and biosecurity practices.In addition to legal responsibilities, all units of competency dealing with animals in the AHC Agriculture, Horticulture and Conservation and Land Management Training Package have the requirements for animals to be handled humanely to minimise stress and discomfort.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to work with livestock feed
  • 1.1 Identify work requirements according to work program, and confirm with supervisor if required
  • 1.2 Identify hazards and risks, and implement safe work practices to manage risks
  • 1.3 Select, fit, use and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE) applicable to the task
  • 1.4 Select, check and maintain tools and equipment required for the task
  • 1.5 Identify environmental risks associated with undertaking work in the feedlot, assess likely outcomes and take appropriate action to minimise risks
  • 1.6 Follow biosecurity protocols for feedlot facility
  • 1.7 Identify and comply with legislative, regulatory and industry requirements
2. Mix feed
  • 2.1 Calibrate scales and containers to be used for measurements
  • 2.2 Identify and collect ingredients from storage locations according to work instructions
  • 2.3 Measure ingredients in specified ratios and quantities according to work instructions
  • 2.4 Blend ingredients according to work instructions using appropriate equipment
  • 2.5 Carry out grinding according to work instructions using appropriate equipment
3. Feed livestock
  • 3.1 Store feed appropriately
  • 3.2 Check feed quality, quantity and type on arrival to the shed
  • 3.3 Feed livestock at scheduled time, rate and frequency
  • 3.4 Maintain quality and hygiene of feed throughout the feeding process
4. Apply and maintain feedlot hygiene and biosecurity procedures
  • 4.1 Examine livestock entering feedlot, check their documentation and isolate them for specified period according to workplace biosecurity procedures
  • 4.2 Maintain feedlot cleanliness and hygiene by selecting and using appropriate cleaning methods
  • 4.3 Maintain thorough personal hygiene practices in all activities associated with handling livestock to reduce risks from zoonotic diseases
  • 4.4 Dismantle, clean and replace equipment and fittings
  • 4.5 Place and dispose of waste and debris in allocated areas, and ensure run-off is managed according to the feedlot code of practice, environment legislation and public health standards
  • 4.6 Report work activities and faulty and unserviceable tools, equipment and PPE to supervisor
  • 4.7 Check and sign in visitors to feedlot according to workplace biosecurity management procedures
