Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to understand and analyse basic harmony functions. This involves analysing the contribution of harmony to performance and compositional outcomes and using knowledge of musical elements to achieve harmonisation in short pieces. The unit applies to those who incorporate a working knowledge of harmony and theoretical language of music into their own practice. They may be working as musicians, songwriters or music producers. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Clarify requirements for analysis
  • 1.1 Discuss requirements, purpose and scope of harmonic analysis with required personnel
  • 1.2 Identify musical styles, genres and pieces for harmonisation
  • 1.3 Identify methods for analysing harmony according to requirements and purpose of work task
  • 1.4 Clarify and address factors that may impact on the analysis
2. Prepare to analyse harmony
  • 2.1 Identify key signatures, accidentals and other harmonic indicators in selected music
  • 2.2 Identify chords and chord progressions in notation and through aural recognition in selected music
  • 2.3 Identify how selected chords in progression are used to create harmonic motion and resolution
  • 2.4 Harmonise musical extracts, applying knowledge of different harmonic and melodic elements
3. Analyse contribution of harmony to performance and compositional outcomes
  • 3.1 Listen to musical examples, and identify and discuss with required personnel the way in which harmony functions
  • 3.2 Investigate the way harmonic elements are combined, manipulated and interpreted for aesthetic, technical and expressive outcomes using musical examples
  • 3.3 Discuss aspects of own harmonisation with required personnel and incorporate feedback and ideas as required
4. Finalise analyses and harmonisations
  • 4.1 Apply theory of harmony and related vocabulary to harmonic analyses and harmonisation
  • 4.2 Present and discuss own analysis and harmonisation with required personnel
  • 4.3 Seek feedback from required personnel on own analyses and harmonisations, and note areas for future improvement
