Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to undertake sanitary and hygiene grooms, including complete shaves or clips for companion animals, to maintain and/or restore animal health and welfare. It assumes a working knowledge of basic pet first aid and species-specific behaviour and handling.This unit is applicable to individuals who work in the companion animal industry sector where grooming services are provided. They work independently and take responsibility for the quality of their own work, including carrying out assigned tasks, selecting products and techniques, solving problems and working to required timeframes.All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures according to Commonwealth and state/territory health and safety and animal welfare regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Determine grooming requirements
  • 1.1 Assess general health, behaviour and coat condition of companion animal
  • 1.2 Identify breed and grooming characteristics of coat type
  • 1.3 Establish client requirements and desired outcome
  • 1.4 Advise client of risks to the animal associated with the proposed work
2. Prepare for grooming
  • 2.1 Identify and minimise the risks associated to groomer and animal according to workplace health and safety and animal welfare requirements
  • 2.2 Consider time management, tools and equipment, and budget in preparing a grooming plan to meet individual animal requirements
  • 2.3 Confirm grooming plan based on animal and client needs
  • 2.4 Select and prepare grooming tools, equipment and supplies, and conduct pre-operational safety checks
  • 2.5 Select and correctly fit personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriate for grooming activity
3. Introduce grooming to companion animal with special handling requirements
  • 3.1 Identify animal with special handling requirements
  • 3.2 Condition animal with special handling requirements to accept handling of body areas for clipping and trimming
  • 3.3 Use techniques to control, secure or restrain animal with special handling requirements during clipping and trimming
  • 3.4 Use scissors to accustom animal to the sensation of trimming
  • 3.5 Use clippers to introduce animal to the sensation of clipping
  • 3.6 Use nail scissors and/or nail file or grinder to accustom animal to the sensation of having nails groomed
4. Groom animal
  • 4.1 Secure animal for grooming, and monitor for signs of distress
  • 4.2 Implement safe grooming techniques to address matted or knotted coat using brushes, combs and/or de-matting tools
  • 4.3 Groom coat to restore animal health, hygiene and welfare
  • 4.4 Clip or file nails using appropriate technique for animal
5. Remove coat for animal health and wellbeing
  • 5.1 Trim or shave coat safely using appropriate equipment on all body areas to restore animal health, hygiene and welfare
  • 5.2 Remove hair from ears and around eyes and feet according to grooming plan
  • 5.3 Bath and dry animal using breed or species appropriate techniques
6. Complete grooming and trimming procedures
  • 6.1 Provide animal with water, house safely and monitor animal until client arrives
  • 6.2 Return animal to client and discuss any follow-up requirements
  • 6.3 Clean, sanitise and store grooming equipment, and audit and record supplies
  • 6.4 Collect and dispose of waste material according to workplace health and safety, environmental and legislative requirements
  • 6.5 Document grooming services for invoicing
