Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare and apply fixed and rotary wing aircraft markings, graphics and decals during the performance of scheduled or unscheduled maintenance. Work may be performed individually or as part of a team.The unit is used in workplaces that operate under the airworthiness regulatory systems of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and the Defence Aviation Safety Authority (DASA).Any other relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Interpret requirements and prepare materials for aircraft markings, graphics and decals
- 1.1 Determine requirements for markings, graphics and decals from maintenance documentation including finishing scheme drawings, enterprise procedures and maintenance publications
- 1.2 Identify and gather equipment for task from maintenance documentation and specified procedures
- 1.3 Match aircraft or component identification with relevant maintenance documentation
- 1.4 Prepare and match decals with documentation
- 1.5 Manufacture markings or marking stencils in accordance with drawings and specifications
- 1.6 Manufacture graphics or graphic stencils in accordance with drawings and specifications
2. Prepare for application of aircraft markings and graphics
- 2.1 Identify and comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements and check personal protective equipment (PPE) for correct fit and function
- 2.2 Assemble materials and equipment application of markings and graphics
- 2.3 Clean surface on which marking or graphic will be applied in accordance with standard enterprise procedures
- 2.4 Accurately determine marking or graphic position and apply required masking or barrier materials
3. Apply aircraft markings, graphics and decals
- 3.1 Establish environmental requirements for application of markings and graphics in accordance with enterprise procedures
- 3.2 Apply markings and graphics in accordance with standard enterprise procedures
- 3.3 Perform required rework and measurement of gloss and thickness in accordance with standard enterprise procedures
- 3.4 Perform required final clean-up tasks, including removing masking or barrier materials as required
- 3.5 Determine decal positions, clean surfaces and apply decals in accordance with standard enterprise procedures
- 3.6 Complete required documentation in accordance with standard enterprise procedures
4. Clean up work area and maintain equipment
- 4.1 Collect and store reusable material
- 4.2 Remove and dispose of or store waste material in accordance with legislative, regulatory and standard enterprise procedures
- 4.3 Clean equipment in accordance with standard enterprise procedures or manufacturer’s instructions
- 4.4 Check equipment for serviceability and deal with unserviceable items in accordance with standard enterprise procedures
- 4.5 Clean and maintain tools in accordance with standard enterprise procedures
- 4.6 Clean work area and inspect for serviceable condition against workplace standards
