Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to operate a heavy rigid vehicle in the resources and infrastructure industries.It applies to those working in supervisory and technical specialist roles. They generally work under minimal supervision to undertake a broad range of skilled applications in varied work contexts, using some discretion and judgement in selecting equipment, services or contingency measures.Licensing, legislative and certification requirements may apply to this unit and can vary between states, territories and industry sectors. Users must check requirements with relevant body before applying the unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for heavy rigid vehicle operations
  • 1.1 Obtain, interpret and confirm work requirements
  • 1.2 Access, interpret and apply documentation required to operate a heavy rigid vehicle
  • 1.3 Access, read, interpret and apply available information about site conditions required to complete the allocated work in accordance with site procedures
  • 1.4 Prepare vehicle written records and carry out log-on procedures
2. Operate heavy rigid vehicle
  • 2.1 Determine coordination activities with others prior to commencement of, and during, the work activity
  • 2.2 Carry out prestart, start-up, park-up and shutdown procedures
  • 2.3 Attach ancillary attachments to the heavy rigid vehicle according to manufacturer specifications
  • 2.4 Operate heavy rigid vehicle with and without ancillary attachments according to manufacturer specifications
  • 2.5 Manage engine power, ensure efficiency of vehicle movement, minimise strain to the engine and drive line according to manufacturer specifications
  • 2.6 Recognise and respond to hazardous and emergency situations
  • 2.7 Complete work activity within the operating capacity of the heavy rigid vehicle
3. Carry out operator maintenance
  • 3.1 Carry out visual and physical equipment inspections and fault finding according to workplace procedures
  • 3.2 Carry out routine operational maintenance, servicing, lubrication and housekeeping tasks according to workplace
  • 3.3 Carry out schedule of minor maintenance according to workplace procedures
  • 3.4 Provide operator support during preparation for, and conduct of, major maintenance tasks
  • 3.5 Process written maintenance records according to workplace procedures
