Description
This unit of competency describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to assist the dentist or dental specialist in carrying out dental procedures on patients under relative analgesia (RA).This unit applies to dental assisting work under the instruction and supervision of the dental practitioner.The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Check gas supplies and equipment prior to patient arrival.
  • 1.1. Ensure adequate levels of nitrous and oxygen gas supply available.
  • 1.2. Check selection of nose piece sizes available.
  • 1.3. Prepare patient personal protective equipment compatible with relative analgesia nosepiece.
  • 1.4. Check bag and hoses for damage or deterioration.
  • 1.5. Confirm scavenger equipment functioning.
  • 1.6. Check pulse oximetry equipment is functional.
2. Prepare the patient for dental procedures during relative analgesia.
  • 2.1. Confirm and document arrangements for an escort for patient following the procedure.
  • 2.2. Check patient’s ability to breathe through nose.
  • 2.3. Make patient dental records accessible in the clean zone of the surgery.
  • 2.4. Maintain confidentiality of patient information in accordance with organisational policy and procedures.
  • 2.5. Assist with the confirmation of the correct patient, site, and procedure.
3. Select and prepare equipment, instruments, materials and medicaments for use during relative analgesia.
  • 3.1. Follow organisational policy and procedures to prepare equipment including resuscitation equipment, instruments materials and medicaments for the planned procedure.
  • 3.2. Arrange instruments for dental procedures in order of use, according to practitioner requirements.
  • 3.3. Provide personal protective equipment to the patient.
  • 3.4. Select and transfer safely the correct dental instruments, equipment, materials and medicaments.
4. Assist patient undergoing dental procedures during relative analgesia delivery and post procedure recovery.
  • 4.1. Follow organisational policy and procedures while assisting in providing pre, during and post-operative dental procedures.
  • 4.2. Monitor and record patient pulse as required by operator.
  • 4.3. Monitor and report patient response and reflexes as required.
  • 4.4. Note flow rate, times, level and report as required to the practitioner.
  • 4.5. Disassemble and decontaminate equipment.
  • 4.6. Remain in operatory room during administration of relative analgesia.
  • 4.7. Confirm post-operative written instructions are communicated and provided by authorised person to patient, carer or escort.
  • 4.8. Assist in the authorised discharge of patient to the carer or escort.
