Elements and Performance Criteria

The range statement relates to the unit of competency as a whole. It allows for different work environments and situations that may affect performance. Bold italicised wording, if used in the performance criteria, is detailed below. Essential operating conditions that may be present with training and assessment (depending on the work situation, needs of the candidate, accessibility of the item, and local industry and regional contexts) may also be included.

Work instructions
May include: Oral, written or visual communication including completion of standard forms, interpretation of information and instructions associated with workplace activities, and recording and reporting of work outcomes

Conditions of work may include:
Work may be undertaken either individually or in a team environment and may require the exercise of independence, discretion and judgement
Work may involve interaction with other people in the workplace including supervisors and production personnel
Work is assessed in accordance with statutory requirements, enterprise insurance requirements, OH&S legislation, manual handling procedures and relevant health and safety regulations
Work is generally performed under moderate supervision and subject to review by supervisors

Work environment may include:
Operational indoor workplaces
Operational outdoor workplaces
On client site
Restricted or confined spaces
Hazardous or exposed conditions

Work type will be based on:
Processes to be performed
Materials to be used (e.g. Steel, aluminium, bronze, stainless steel, wood, plastic, canvas)
Working environment (e.g. wet or exposed conditions)

Hand and power tools
Safe use should be demonstrated on a selection of the following, including at least two power tools:
Measuring equipment, spanners, pliers, screwdrivers, wire strippers, hacksaws, hammers, shovels and crowbars, chisels, files, pop riveting machines, power tools - drills, angle grinders, hammer drills, grinders, circular saws, jig saws and lifting/hoisting equipment
Safe use should include identification of potential hidden hazards eg. as associated with 'blind' drilling in walls and use of relevant safety equipment such as RCDs, rubber mats, rubber gloves etc.

Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate competency in this unit

Evidence of the following is essential:

Comply with all relevant safety requirements applying to the use of hand and power tools
Interpret work orders relevant to the selection and use of tools
Interpret specifications and instructions relating to the materials and equipment on which the tools are to be used
Prepare work environment for safe and effective tool use
Set up tools for safe and effective use
Perform work processes with the tools
Safe use of a range of hand and power tools (see RANGE STATEMENT)
Monitor tool operation for correct operation during use
Inspect completed work to verify correct tool operation and use
Document and communicate work related information including reporting of faults and other problems

Context of, and specific resources for assessment

Assessment must ensure:

A workplace conducting the operations covered by this competency unit, equipment and resources relevant to the context of the work (See Range Statement) and support from a competent supervisor or mentor.
OR
A simulated environment with similar provisions which conforms to the Assessment Guidelines.

Guidance information for assessment
Access must be provided to appropriate learning and assessment support when required.
Assessment processes and techniques must be culturally appropriate, and appropriate to the oral communication skill level, and language and literacy capacity of the candidate and the work being performed.
In all cases where practical assessment is used it will be combined with targeted questioning to assess underpinning knowledge.
