Description
This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to coordinate information about companion animal evacuation processes and facilities to prepare for major incidents. The unit applies to individuals who have responsibility for determining and accessing database information to prepare for a companion animal rescue during a major incident. These individuals analyse information and exercise judgement to complete activities to coordinate information in a readily available manner.All work must be carried out to comply with Commonwealth and state/territory health and safety and animal welfare regulations.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Access existing databases and assess the need to integrate information
  • 1.1 Source information on which organisations manage existing animal identification databases, access points and service linkages
  • 1.2 Assess the need to develop a user-friendly, efficient database to coordinate companion animal rescue information
  • 1.3 Assess the potential for using existing registers to service incidents where temporary identification is required, and seek permission to access existing relevant databases
2. Communicate with service providers, and assess information
  • 2.1 Contact personnel of service providers who can provide companion animal emergency services, and obtain their permission for their services to be listed on a database
  • 2.2 Access documents as required, maintaining confidentiality
  • 2.3 Assess the accuracy and currency of the information
  • 2.4 Brief hazard management agency and incident support group on data update requirements
3. Determine requirements and update information to meet local companion animal rescue needs
  • 3.1 Source information relating to local animal facilities for emergency housing, companion animal movement methods and shelter suitability according to incident type
  • 3.2 List companion animal emergency requirements
  • 3.3 List suitable equipment for the movement and housing of animals
  • 3.4 Identify workplace health and safety, animal welfare practices and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements
  • 3.5 Store documents according to workplace requirements
