Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop techniques for integrating dancing with acting and singing skills required of musical theatre performers.The unit applies to those who are starting careers in musical theatre. They are expected to work independently on developing the physical stamina required to combine singing and dancing in partnered and group routines. At this level, supervision and guidance are provided during practice sessions. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Apply physical conditioning program
  • 1.1 Set physical conditioning goals aimed at improving own musical theatre dance techniques
  • 1.2 Identify variety of techniques to prevent injuries and improve stamina, strength and flexibility in consultation with required personnel, according to physical conditioning goals
  • 1.3 Identify risk factors that may inhibit achievement of goals and seek advice as required
  • 1.4 Confirm that required clothing and footwear are worn for exercise regime and dance technique
  • 1.5 Perform warm-up and warm-down activities in conjunction with dance and physical activities according to safe dance practices
  • 1.6 Note and discuss with required personnel fatigue and personal limitations when undertaking physical conditioning program as required
2. Practise dancing skills in musical theatre context
  • 2.1 Practise a variety of exercises that relate to musical theatre dance routines
  • 2.2 Practise performing dancing techniques in different theatrical contexts
  • 2.3 Work with others and develop expertise in performing with a partner and in an ensemble
  • 2.4 Practise solo pieces, applying knowledge of musical rhythms and musical theatre styles to dance routines
  • 2.5 Develop techniques for integrating singing into dance routines and performing with different microphone placements
  • 2.6 Test techniques for incorporating acting and dance in musical theatre routines
  • 2.7 Convey choreographic intent of routines through confident and precise execution of dance techniques
3. Review and develop strategy to enhance musical theatre dance skills
  • 3.1 Identify sources that can be used to update knowledge of musical theatre trends acting techniques associated with major musical theatre genres
  • 3.2 Use feedback from others on development of musical theatre dance skills to develop strategy for future improvement
  • 3.3 View performances by industry practitioners and identify new ideas and trends that can be applied to own musical theatre and dance practice
