Description
This unit of competency defines the skills and knowledge required to detail various types of bolts and welds for structural steelwork connections consistent with design specifications for residential, commercial, industrial or mining fabrication and construction projects. It is suitable primarily for those working within a drafting work environment with engineering and manufacturing applications.Work may be performed individually on a contracting/project basis or as part of a project team in response to combinations of paper-based and digital instructions.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Determine job requirements
- 1.1 Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- 1.2 Comply with work health and safety (WHS) requirements at all times
- 1.3 Identify job requirements from specifications
- 1.4 Determine fabrication shop capabilities and fabricator preferences
2. Determine shop and field connections from design drawings
- 2.1 Allocate connections as shop or field-welded in conjunction with fabricator
- 2.2 Allocate connections to be field-bolted and decide the extent of shop preparation of connections
- 2.3 Allocate connection fittings to either columns or beams to suit fabrication efficiency or design requirements
- 2.4 Make a request for further information (RFI) to design engineer where clarification of requirements is needed
3. Detail bolts for connections
- 3.1 Specify bolt types and sizes for each connection using design information and consideration of commercial availability
- 3.2 Select bolt and thread lengths according to design specifications and connection requirements
- 3.3 Detail bolt and bolt holes taking into account AS 4100 Steel structures requirements, tightening and tensioning specifications and clearances
- 3.4 Prepare and check field bolt list and send to fabricator
4. Detail welds for connections
- 4.1 Identify shop and field welds
- 4.2 Use standard welding symbols
- 4.3 Apply clearances for welding
- 4.4 Place field weld details on erection plans and shop drawings and submit to design engineer for approval
