Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to develop and apply techniques for bringing a comic dimension to characters and scenes in musical theatre productions.The unit applies to those who are incorporating comedy into musical theatre performances. Performers are also required to sing and dance during performances. At this level, supervision and guidance are provided during practice sessions. However, individuals are expected to work independently on experimenting with ways to use the comic potential of characters in a range of musical theatre styles.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to apply comic performance techniques
  • 1.1 Identify and analyse problems that could limit movement and physical expression, or cause injury
  • 1.2 Discuss ways to avoid physical and vocal problems with required personnel, and develop strategies for addressing problems if they arise
  • 1.3 Perform vocal and physical warm-up routine in preparation for performance activities
  • 1.4 Develop individual practice schedule with exercises to strengthen and expand vocal and physical techniques
2. Develop and apply comic performance concepts in musical theatre context
  • 2.1 Discuss the appeal of comedy and how comic performance techniques can be used to enhance musical theatre performances with required personnel
  • 2.2 Test ways of using humour in portrayal of characters in different musical theatre styles
  • 2.3 Integrate comedy into songs and dance routines, and produce comic effects by speaking and singing in different accents
  • 2.4 Explore physicality of character using gesture, timing and action
  • 2.5 Experiment with ways of using comedy to engage with audiences
  • 2.6 Participate in improvisation, alone and with a partner, as a way of adding humour to characterisation
  • 2.7 Perform routine that integrates dancing, singing and comic performance skills in a rehearsal environment
3. Review and maintain comic acting skills
  • 3.1 Evaluate own development of comic performance skills in musical theatre context
  • 3.2 Use feedback from others to develop strategies for improving own comic performance skills
  • 3.3 Maintain and update knowledge of musical theatre trends, stagecraft, and production protocols and procedures
  • 3.4 Attend performances by industry practitioners and document new ideas and industry trends that can be applied to own practice
