Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to conduct surface blast hole drilling operations in the resources and infrastructure industries. It includes marking out drill patterns, setting up, operating and relocating drill rigs, and carrying out equipment maintenance and inspection activities.It applies to those working in driller roles. They generally work under minimal supervision to undertake a broad range of skilled applications in varied work contexts, using some discretion and judgement in selecting equipment, services or contingency measures.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for surface blast hole drilling operations
- 1.1 Obtain, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements and procedures
- 1.2 Access, interpret and apply surface blast hole drilling documentation and confirm work activity is compliant
- 1.3 Inspect and prepare work area according to job and site requirements
- 1.4 Identify, manage and report potential hazards and risks according to site requirements
- 1.5 Resolve coordination requirements with others within scope of own role
- 1.6 Select and wear personal protective equipment according to site requirements
2. Mark out drill pattern
- 2.1 Adjust drill pattern according to authorised tolerances and drilling plan
- 2.2 Obtain authorisation for changes to drill pattern plan
- 2.3 Place indicators on drill pattern according to job requirements
- 2.4 Mark out drill pattern according to job and site requirements
- 2.5 Protect pre-existing drill holes according to site requirements
3. Operate drill system
- 3.1 Carry out pre-start and start-up procedures according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
- 3.2 Locate and set up drill rig and equipment according to drilling plan
- 3.3 Break out rod and change drill bits according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
- 3.4 Select and modify operating techniques according to changing work conditions
- 3.5 Conduct, control and monitor operations according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
- 3.6 Stabilise hole by collaring and adjusting drilling techniques as required
- 3.7 Respond to monitoring systems and alarms according to site requirements or report as required
- 3.8 Recognise and respond to hazardous and emergency situations
- 3.9 Complete work according to manufacturer specifications, job and site requirements
- 3.10 Adhere to emergency procedures to confirm safe operation of plant and equipment
- 3.11 Conduct quality checks at predetermined drill depths
- 3.12 Relocate drill according to manufacturer specifications, location plan and site requirements
- 3.13 Carry out parkup and shutdown drill procedures according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
4. Carry out postoperational procedures
- 4.1 Inspect, fault find and report faults according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
- 4.2 Carry out routine operator servicing, maintenance and housekeeping according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
- 4.3 Provide operator support for major maintenance tasks according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
- 4.4 Process written records and reports according to manufacturer specifications and site requirements
