Description
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to plan and set up the assembly of timber floor trusses using a purpose built jig or computer-operated truss table and to oversee the operation of the truss press. The unit applies to machine operators and product technicians in a timber and wood products production environment at either a truss/frame fabrication facility or timber merchant’s facility.No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for assembly
  • 1.1 Review and clarify constructions plans and work order with appropriate personnel.
  • 1.2 Obtain type and quantity of material to be assembled and hardware from storage location.
  • 1.3 Select appropriate tools and equipment and check for operational effectiveness in line with manufacturer's recommendations.
  • 1.4 Identify and prepare set-up table or jigs required for construction.
2. Set up floor truss
  • 2.1 Assess product size and number of joints with table or jig area; plan sections and layout.
  • 2.2 Select timber components from pre-cut material in line with cutting list and check for fit.
  • 2.3 Select steel web components in line with construction plans and standards.
  • 2.4 Position jig components to accurately locate and support assembly components and adjust jig or table to suit.
  • 2.5 Position and clamp components in jigs ready for joining with allowable faults, joins and grain in line with construction standards and grading rules.
  • 2.6 Set components to include adjustments, overhang and other design requirements.
  • 2.7 Set up webs to nominated pattern configuration.
  • 2.8 Identify defective components; dispose of or recycle in line with environmental protection practices.
  • 2.9 Clamp and/or nail components to maintain temporary alignment during assembly
3. Control pressing operations
  • 3.1 Coordinate truss-pressing operations to ensure finished product complies with customer orders.
  • 3.2 Correct assembly faults in line with organisational procedures.
4. Prepare products for despatch and report
  • 4.1 Assess finished product for quality against construction standards and label in line with work order.
  • 4.2 Remove components from table or jigs and safely stack in designated location in line with work order requirements
  • 4.3 Strap, pack and label finished ready for transportation.
  • 4.4 Report equipment faults to appropriate personnel.
  • 4.5 Complete and maintain accurate records and reports of assembly outcomes in line with organisational procedures.
