This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare for and use electronic media and computer-based technology to create simple musical pieces.The unit applies to those who use knowledge of musical styles, elements and structures to create musical pieces, using music technology as the primary development tool.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to create simple musical piece using music technology
  • 1.1 Determine purpose of musical piece to be developed and agree on timeframe for delivery with required personnel
  • 1.2 Investigate features of software applications and music technology and determine use for own musical piece
  • 1.3 Select musical styles, elements, forms and structures to suit purpose of musical piece
  • 1.4 Select different instruments, sounds and effects to suit style of musical piece
  • 1.5 Identify standard melody conventions to be used in musical piece
2. Develop simple musical piece using music technology
  • 2.1 Organise musical elements into working version of a musical piece using music technology and maintaining style of music
  • 2.2 Use a range of digital audio workstation features to safely develop working version of a musical piece
  • 2.2 Share work in progress with required personnel and seek feedback on creative and technical aspects of musical piece
  • 2.3 Incorporate feedback into musical piece
3. Finalise musical work
  • 3.1 Save and store relevant software project file according to specifications
  • 3.2 Export finalised musical work according to file specifications
  • 3.3 Apply copyright notice to finalised musical work as required
  • 3.4 Present musical piece within required timeframe
4. Evaluate own musical work
  • 4.1 Assess development of music creation techniques and ideas by comparing finalised work with initial work
  • 4.2 Discuss feedback from musical work with required personnel
  • 4.3 Identify strategies for improving own skills in creating music using music technology
