Description
This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to read, interpret and analyse building design drawings for Class 1 and 10 buildings, as defined in the National Construction Code (NCC). It covers interpreting construction industry conventions for drawings and analysing drawings for different projects to identify design and technical features.The unit applies to drafters who work under the supervision and instruction of building designers or architects and use specialised knowledge to complete routine and non-routine tasks and deal with predictable and sometimes unpredictable drafting problems.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

1 Interpret drawing conventions.
- 1.1 Identify sources and review types of drawings used in building design projects.
- 1.2 Identify and confirm industry standard format and content requirements for building design drawings.
- 1.3 Identify and review types of views used in building design drawings.
- 1.4 Identify and review technical drawing conventions used in building design drawings.
- 1.5 Identify and review architectural conventions used in building design drawings.
- 1.6 Identify and review notations used in building design drawings.
2 Analyse building design drawings.
- 2.1 Determine key features of site plans for building design project.
- 2.2 Determine key features of floor plans and sub-floor plans in project drawings.

3 Analyse drawings from relevant external consultants.
- 3.1 Identify external consultants contributing to building design drawings.
- 3.2 Interpret land survey drawings to identify site topographical features.
- 3.3 Interpret structural engineering drawings to identify construction methods.
- 3.4 Examine drawings and reports from relevant disciplines to determine services layout.
- 3.5 Confirm consultant recommendations for building design project from drawings and drawing notations.
- 3.6 Identify anomalies or contradictions in building design drawings and seek advice from relevant personnel.
