Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to perform as part of a backup group.The unit applies to those who are developing technical and interpersonal accompaniment skills on chosen instrument or voice. They play to complement the performance of soloists and blend with other group members.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to perform backup accompaniments
  • 1.1 Confirm performance venue with required personnel
  • 1.2 Confirm lead and backup performance roles and expected performance outcomes with required personnel
  • 1.3 Confirm that individual part in performance is within own technical and artistic ability
  • 1.4 Develop and implement an individual practice plan to gain technical and musical skills and achieve required performance standard
  • 1.5 Take direction from and give support to performers during rehearsals
  • 1.6 Seek feedback on own rehearsal performance from required personnel, and adjust performance technique as required
2. Perform backup accompaniments
  • 2.1 Apply instrumental or vocal techniques according to accompaniment requirements
  • 2.2 Achieve required sound and balance between lead and backing players by listening to own and others’ performance, and adjust playing or singing and volume as required
  • 2.3 Maintain own conduct and appearance required for performance context
  • 2.4 Take and give cues and contribute to a cohesive performance
3. Evaluate performances
  • 3.1 Discuss and evaluate feedback from performers in the performance
  • 3.2 Evaluate own performance as a backup accompanist, and note areas for future improvement
  • 3.3 Seek feedback on own performance from required personnel, and incorporate suggestions into strategies for improving own backup accompaniment skills
