This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to identify and specify product and material characteristics and to specify machine settings and modifications for product change.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Analyse product
  • 1.1 Pattern or product specifications are analysed
  • 1.2 Measuring or testing equipment is prepared and used as required to identify characteristics or specifications of product and material
  • 1.3 Product and material specifications are analysed to determine production parameters
2 Analyse machine requirements
  • 2.1 Machine requirements and limitations are determined relative to required specifications
  • 2.2 OHS practices associated with machine specifications are determined
  • 2.3 Product and material specifications are translated into machine settings and configurations
3 Specify machine settings and modifications
  • 3.1 Modification requirements are established and approved, where required, to meet specified outcomes
  • 3.2 Modifications or adaptations are assessed in accordance with relevant procedures and specifications
  • 3.3 Machine modifications are evaluated and results confirmed against requirements
  • 3.4 Machine settings and modifications are checked against specification prior to machine setting
  • 3.5 Machine settings and modifications are recorded and communicated to appropriate team members

Legislative/regulatory requirements

Machine settings may include:
mechanical devices, tools such as cams, gears, trip tags, pin boards
microprocessor and computer controlled machines
OHS practices
OHS practices must include hazard identification and control, risk assessment and implementation of risk reduction measures specific to the tasks described by this unit, and may include:
manual handling techniques
standard operating procedures
personal protective equipment
safe materials handling
taking of rest breaks
ergonomic arrangement of workplaces
following marked walkways
safe storage of equipment
housekeeping
reporting accidents and incidents
other OHS practices relevant to the job and enterprise
