Description
This unit describes the required skills and knowledge to conduct health promotion related to maternal and child health as part of primary health care services for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander communities.It applies to those Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Workers providing a range of primary health care services to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander clients and communities. The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Provide health information, support and care for women and families in pregnancy
  • 1.1 Develop positive relationships with women and families
  • 1.2 Provide information and support on maintaining good health and wellbeing prior to and during pregnancy
  • 1.3 Provide emotional support to women and families as appropriate during pregnancy
  • 1.4 Identify and discuss risk factors for mother and baby and refer to appropriate support agencies
  • 1.5 Identify, support and advocate safe birthing practices and cultural beliefs
  • 1.6 Discuss roles, relationships and responsibilities to support safe birthing, including the role of the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Worker as an advocate for women and families
  • 1.7 Deliver, implement and monitor care as per standard treatment protocol in accordance with legislative guidelines
  • 1.8 Work with a team to deliver effective health promotion and education for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander families using appropriate facilitation, problem-solving and instructional practices
2. Provide health information, support and care after birth for women, infants and families
  • 2.1 Provide information and support for self-care and wellbeing during the post-natal period
  • 2.2 Provide advice to mothers on routine care of the newborn
  • 2.3 Implement strategies to establish and support breastfeeding
  • 2.4 Discuss with mother and family the importance of nutrition, physical activity, rest, sleep and support with the care of family in the immediate post-natal period
  • 2.5 Identify minor post-natal problems for mother and newborn and provide advice and referral to appropriate agencies
  • 2.6 Deliver, implement and monitor care in the post-natal period as per standard treatment protocol in accordance with legislative guidelines
  • 2.7 Work with a team to deliver effective health promotion and education for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander families using appropriate facilitation, problem-solving and instructional practices
3. Support maternal, infant and family health and wellbeing
  • 3.1 Deliver, implement and monitor care as per standard treatment protocol in accordance with legislative guidelines
  • 3.2 Organise reminders, transport and other assistance to attend care and/or provide support according to women’s needs
  • 3.3 Implement strategies to improve maternal and/or infant health in line with community requirements and organisation
  • 3.4 Identify, engage and support high-risk families
  • 3.5 Provide support and referral to appropriate agencies as required
  • 3.6 Keep statistics on attendance for antenatal care and birthing outcomes and use to evaluate maternal health program
