Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to install laminate and hybrid vinyl flooring including flooring of composite materials intended for floating installation: that is, products that are not recommended for direct fixing.Workers with this competency undertake routine tasks on residential and non-residential/commercial sites according to job instructions and workplace procedures using discretion, judgement and problem-solving to identify and resolve routine issues. They work with a high degree of self-direction under routine supervision, and they are responsible for their output.The work described in this unit may require a licence or certification in some jurisdictions, and state or territory authorities should be consulted to determine the current status. Workers on construction sites are required by law to complete induction training. They must also comply with relevant legislation, regulations, Australian Standards, codes and manufacturer installation instructions.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to install laminate and hybrid vinyl flooring
- 1.1 Read and interpret laminate and hybrid vinyl flooring installation requirements from job and manufacturer instructions and calculate the quantities of materials required
- 1.2 Identify hazards relating to the work site, work practices, materials, tools and equipment, and check risk treatments are in place and operating
- 1.3 Select and check all required tools and equipment are ready to use, and organise to fix any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
- 1.4 Gather the flooring, underlay, adhesives, trims and other materials required by job instructions, and check they meet quality requirements and are prepared and ready to install according to manufacturer instructions, product labels and safety data sheets
- 1.5 Confirm the subfloor is clean and suitable for installing the flooring, and fix or report any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
- 1.6 Remove or undercut door jambs, cover trims and other joinery, and store for refitting or send for machining according to job instructions
2. Cut, fit and fasten the laminate and hybrid vinyl flooring
- 2.1 Install appropriate underlay if required according to manufacturer instructions
- 2.2 Establish the starting point and mark out working lines
- 2.3 Lay out the flooring pieces according to job instructions to maximise aesthetics with respect to material colours, grains and patterns and to minimise waste and joins, and to ensure an efficient, quality installation
- 2.4 Measure, mark and cut the flooring pieces to length and size
- 2.5 Install the flooring according to the manufacturer instructions, allowing appropriate field and perimeter expansion joints
- 2.6 Trim off excess, install finishing strips, refit removed items and finish installing the flooring to meet quality requirements
- 2.7 Check the flooring is installed correctly according to job instructions and quality requirements, and fix any deficiencies
3. Complete the task according to workplace procedures
- 3.1 Clean up the work area, identify items for recycling and dispose of waste
- 3.2 Identify, tag and report any damage to equipment and tools
- 3.3 Check, clean and do routine maintenance on equipment and tools and store them and unused materials
