Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to provide nursing interventions for people with sexual and reproductive health care needs.Enrolled nurses providing nursing care in the area of sexual and reproductive health hold and apply specialised in-depth knowledge, integrate theory and practice and make reliable clinical assessments and judgements.This unit applies to enrolled nurses, registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), seeking specialisation in enrolled nurse work that is carried out in consultation and collaboration with registered nurses, and under direct or indirect supervisory arrangements aligned to the NMBA regulatory authority legislative requirements.The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian Standards and industry codes of practice.No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Identify and discuss sexual and reproductive health problems.
  • 1.1. Identify sexual health screening programs and support services to identify health issues.
  • 1.2. Evaluate observations and pathology results indicating variations from normal sexual and reproductive health status.
  • 1.3. Provide information at a primary health care level on risk factors, indicators and interventions for sexually transmissible infections (STIs) and blood-borne infections (BBIs).
  • 1.4. Use a confidential and safe place for confirming contact tracing, disclosure of information and requirements in reporting notifiable STIs or BBIs.
  • 1.5. Use health information and resources to explain the development of sexual health conditions.
  • 1.6. Promote safe and healthy sexual and lifestyle practices and provide associated resources and information.
2. Clarify impact of sexual and reproductive health condition.
  • 2.1. Apply contemporary requirements of sexual and reproductive health conditions and associated pathophysiology to clinical practice.
  • 2.2. Identify psychosocial impact and potential complications and clarify care needs.
  • 2.3. Identify pathophysiology and disease process within scope of enrolled nursing practice to articulate and respond to care needs.
3. Contribute to team planning and nursing interventions for sexual and reproductive health care.
  • 3.1. Identify where the acuity of a person exceeds own knowledge, skill and assessed competence and refer to others within the multidisciplinary health care team.
  • 3.2. Identify effects of culture, ageing, disability and illness on sexuality and sexual behaviour.
  • 3.3. Identify nursing interventions to incorporate contemporary sexual and reproductive health strategies into practice.
  • 3.4. Liaise with multidisciplinary health care team to provide information related to maintaining sexual and reproductive health in line with community needs and organisational policies and procedures.
  • 3.5. Apply resources and referral to service providers on sexual health and reproductive health care.
  • 3.6. Assess, evaluate and amend plan of care as required to ensure progress toward planned outcomes.
4. Promote improvements in sexual and reproductive health.
  • 4.1. Evaluate nursing care interventions provided and outcomes against evidence-based best practice in sexual and reproductive health in collaboration with the registered nurse and align with organisational continuous improvement objectives.
  • 4.2. Seek opportunities and participate in professional development, to guide own practice and act as a resource for colleagues.
5. Address contemporary issues in sexual and reproductive health.
  • 5.1. Apply requirements of influences that shape sexuality in current and historical contexts.
  • 5.2. Identify, educate and evaluate contraception choices to support and provide health education about available options.
  • 5.3. Educate and support pregnancy choices and options for unplanned pregnancies.
  • 5.4. Provide information and referral options on risk-taking behaviours and educate to promote safe sex practices.
