Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to attach a holter monitor and produce a diagnostic trace for submission to the requesting medical officer.  This unit applies to individuals working in health settings, such as pathology collection centres, medical centres, hospitals and cardiologist rooms. They work under the supervision of an appropriate health professional and follow established clinical guidelines. The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with current Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice. No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare equipment for use
  • 1.1 Check equipment for working order according to organisational procedures
  • 1.2 Check materialsfor availability according to organisational procedures
  • 1.3 Check battery is charged, insert new battery if required
  • 1.4 Add SD card or other data recording device into holter monitor according to organisational procedures
2. Prepare client for holter monitor
  • 2.1 Greet client courteously and identify self
  • 2.2 Identify client according to organisational procedures
  • 2.3 Obtain, interpret and record personal and clinical information according to organisational procedures
  • 2.4 Provide complete, clear and accurate information in easily understood language regarding the holter monitoring procedure to client
  • 2.5 Provide the client with the opportunity to ask questions and discuss areas of concern
  • 2.6 Obtain consent following ethical and legal requirements
3. Prepare for monitor recording
  • 3.1 Maintain client privacy and dignity throughout procedure
  • 3.2 Follow standard infection control procedures
  • 3.3 Position the client comfortably and place electrodes according to manufacturer specifications and organisational procedures
  • 3.4 Prepare client’s skin for electrode placement
  • 3.5 Attach leads and double check lead placement
  • 3.6 Check all channels for signal quality prior to recording
  • 3.7 Provide instruction to client on use of device
4. Complete holter monitor process
  • 4.1 Provide client with assistance if required on completion of procedure
  • 4.2 Remove and dispose of holter monitor electrodes in accordance with organisational procedures
  • 4.3 Clean and store holter monitor machine in accordance with manufacturer specifications and work health and safety (WHS) policies and procedures
