Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to implement nursing care as outlined in a person’s nursing care plan, evaluate outcomes of care provided, record and report progress, and respond to emergency situations.This unit applies to enrolled nursing work carried out in consultation and collaboration with registered nurses, and under supervisory arrangements aligned to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) regulatory authority legislative requirements.The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian Standards and industry codes of practice.No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare a person for nursing care procedures.
  • 1.1. Explain procedures, preparation required and timeframe involved, and gain consent.
  • 1.2. Apply culturally safe approaches for all peoples including specific approaches required for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • 1.3. Maintain privacy and dignity during preparation and procedures.
2. Implement nursing care procedures to meet identified needs.
  • 2.1. Provide assistance to address personal and oral hygiene and dressing and grooming needs to achieve health outcomes.
  • 2.2. Identify contributing factors and implement strategies to prevent skin problems and manage skin integrity.
  • 2.3. Confirm nutritional and elimination needs and apply strategies to meet identified needs.
  • 2.4. Assist respiratory function by demonstrating and promoting deep breathing and coughing exercises.
  • 2.5. Use measures to promote comfort, rest and sleep.
  • 2.6. Encourage the person to contribute to their own independence and mobility through active and passive exercises.
  • 2.7. Identify and respond to signs and symptoms of emergency situations and conditions.
  • 2.8. Use emergency procedures and initiate basic life support according to organisational policies and procedures.
3. Monitor identified nursing care needs.
  • 3.1. Maintain ongoing monitoring through observation and using equipment and devices.
  • 3.2. Prioritise work activities to address urgent needs and maintain a balanced approach to own workload.
  • 3.3. Record and report concerns in the person’s condition and behaviour to the registered nurse, and report situations of risk according to organisational policies and procedures.
4. Evaluate outcomes of nursing care provided.
  • 4.1. Identify and evaluate own contribution to nursing plan of care.
  • 4.2. Evaluate progress towards planned outcomes as documented in the plan of care.
  • 4.3. Make required changes to nursing plan of care in line with nursing best practice.
  • 4.4. Record and report evaluation of nursing care provided.
