Description
This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to marshal aircraft during start/shutdown phases, and to direct aircraft movements as ground personnel using standard aircraft marshalling signals.It includes preparing for marshalling and determining aircraft parking position, and marshalling aircraft during start up, shut down and taxiing.The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to, particularly those related to the standard Australian Defence Force (ADF) marshalling signals.Persons undertaking this unit work independently or in small teams, make independent decisions and perform routine tasks in occasionally less familiar contexts while working at an airfield or on a ship where they will marshal aircraft as part of their duties.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare for marshalling
  • 1.1 Process aircraft arrival or departure in accordance with organisational procedures
  • 1.2 Determine and clarify marshalling requirements for different aircraft types, as required
  • 1.3 Check and verify aircraft documentation serviceability status
  • 1.4 Select and fit personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • 1.5 Apply work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) operations requirements
  • 1.6 Confirm allocated aircraft parking position
  • 1.7 Select and check for serviceability, ancillary support equipment used for marshalling and aircraft parking
  • 1.8 Complete relevant documentation
2 Determine aircraft parking position
  • 2.1 Ensure aircraft position during marshalling, aircraft parking, and use of ancillary support equipment is in accordance with manufacturer procedures
  • 2.2 Conduct movement on tarmac in a safe manner in accordance with organisational procedures
  • 2.3 Monitor environmental factors to maintain safety when marshalling or parking aircraft
3 Marshal aircraft during start/shut down
  • 3.1 Identify and apply special circumstances and procedures during aircraft systems start-and shut-down
  • 3.2 Employ standard marshalling signals and/or communication
  • 3.3 Maintain visual contact with pilot, other aircrew and/or ground staff
  • 3.4 Ensure safety of self and other personnel within the vicinity of propellers and engine intakes/exhausts
  • 3.5 Direct personnel to and from aircraft within prescribed entry and exit arcs
  • 3.6 Follow emergency procedures, as required in an incident, in accordance with operational procedures
  • 3.7 Secure aircraft in accordance with operational procedures
4 Marshal aircraft during taxiing
  • 4.1 Identify and apply special circumstances/procedures during aircraft taxiing, as required
  • 4.2 Employ standard marshalling signals and/or communication
  • 4.3 Maintain visual contact with the pilot, other aircrew or ground staff
  • 4.4 Maintain safety distances between aircraft and ground personnel/obstructions
