Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to prepare and mask the body panel of a vehicle. It involves planning and preparing for the task, identifying types of masking materials used in vehicle painting, removing protective waxes and surface contaminants, applying masking, and maintaining the work area, tools and equipment.The unit applies to those undertaking a Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS) or pre-vocational qualification as preparation to entering the automotive service and repair or automotive manufacturing industry. The unit is designed for use in a highly supervised context.No licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for work
- 1.1 Interpret task instructions and identify vehicle body panel to be worked on
- 1.2 Source and interpret manufacturer specifications and workplace procedures for preparing panel surface
- 1.3 Source and interpret safety and environmental requirements
- 1.4 Identify potential hazards and risks associated with task and report to workplace supervisor
- 1.5 Identify tools and equipment required for preparing body panel and check for serviceability
2. Prepare surfaces for masking
- 2.1 Clean panel surface and check for contaminants according to workplace procedures and safety and environmental requirements, and without causing damage to components and systems
- 2.2 Inspect body panel according to workplace requirements
- 2.3 Record body panel inspection results
3. Apply masking materials to surface
- 3.1 Protect or remove components and fittings that can be affected by the refinishing process according to workplace procedures and safety requirements, and without causing damage to components and systems
- 3.2 Apply masking to surfaces adjacent to the area to be refinished according to workplace procedures and safety requirements, and without causing damage to components and systems
- 3.3 Inspect body panel to ensure application of masking
- 3.4 Record body panel inspection results
4. Complete work processes
- 4.1Conduct final inspection according to workplace procedures and confirm vehicle is ready for use
- 4.2Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials according to workplace procedures
- 4.3Complete documentation according to workplace procedures
