Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to follow work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) policy and procedures, and emergency procedures during mooring operations. Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Follow safety and hazard control procedures
  • 1.1 Tests and inspections of ropes and equipment are conducted according to manufacturer’s instructions and terminal and workplace procedures
  • 1.2 Hazards and risks are identified and reported to appropriate personnel in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 1.3 Corrective action is taken to eliminate or minimise risk to personnel, port facilities, vessel and the environment in accordance with workplace procedures and instructions
  • 1.4 Safety precautions and hazard minimisation procedures and regulations are followed at all times during mooring operations
  • 1.5 Safe distance from snapback zones, danger zones and demarcated area is maintained during tensioning and slackening of lines
2 Use personal protective equipment
  • 2.1 Personal protective equipment (PPE) is selected and inspected prior to commencement of operations in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 2.2 PPE is used and stored correctly after use in accordance with workplace procedures
3 Follow safety and emergency procedures
  • 3.1 Wharf, port and vessel emergency procedures are identified and accessed
  • 3.2 Emergency procedures and instructions are followed in accordance with workplace procedures (as required)
  • 3.3 Action is taken to secure vessel and maintain safety of vessel and person involved, in a mooring or unmooring incident in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 3.4 Emergencies are identified correctly and reported to appropriate personnel in accordance with emergency procedures
  • 3.5 Escape routes, emergency communications, alarm signals and alarm systems are used in accordance with emergency procedures (as required)
  • 3.6 Emergencies and safety incidents are recorded accurately and reported to appropriate personnel in accordance with workplace procedures
