Description
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to receive deliveries of logs, measure logs for length and diameter, estimate and calculate log weight and volume, weigh and direct trucks and complete delivery documentation.Work is completed in a forest products factory setting.The unit applies to Sawmill Worker, Production Technician.No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Estimate log weights and volumes
  • 1.1 Select appropriate personal protective equipment and check for operational effectiveness.
  • 1.2 Identify potential and existing hazards and control risks associated with receiving, measuring and weighing logs.
  • 1.3 Measure length and average diameter of logs.
  • 1.4 Calculate estimated log weights and volumes in line with organisational formulas.
2. Check, estimate and record loads
  • 2.1 Stop trucks delivering loads, and check delivery documents.
  • 2.2 Check that load height and stability meet site requirements.
  • 2.3 Inspect type and quantity of logs; assess suitability of size, species and quality for acceptable receipt.
  • 2.4 Calculate and record weight and volume of each log.
  • 2.5 Record delivery documentation and equipment faults in line with organisational procedures.
3. Weigh trucks
  • 3.1 Identify truck gross weight using weighbridge in line with organisational safety procedures.
  • 3.2 Obtain truck tare weight from existing records or note need for weighing.
  • 3.3 Identify truck tare weight on departure using weighbridge in line with organisational safety procedures.
  • 3.4 Calculate and record nett weight of logs and type delivered in line with organisational procedures.
4. Direct trucks for unloading
  • 4.1 Notify log yard personnel of delivery and unloading requirements.
  • 4.2 Direct trucks clearly and accurately to unloading area in line with log classification.
  • 4.3 Monitor and coordinate on-site truck movements, ensuring a safe operating environment.
