Description
This unit covers the competency required to destroy unexploded ordnance (UXO) by detonation.Unexploded ordnance includes any authorised explosive ordnance or explosive ordnance that has failed to function as designed while in use on a licensed range. Destruction is normally carried out by explosives in the location of the unexploded ordnance.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare for destruction
- 1.1 Requirement for the destruction of unexploded ordnance is identified from work requests/instructions and confirmed with relevant personnel.
- 1.2 Work health and safety (WHS) requirements including those contained in organisational procedures, are applied throughout the operation.
- 1.3 Item/s to be destroyed and destruction method are confirmed in accordance with organisation policy and procedures.
- 1.4 Documentation and instructions are prepared in accordance with statutory, organisation requirements.
- 1.5 Liaison and notification of parties affected by the destruction is undertaken in accordance with organisation policy and procedures, and Range Standing Orders.
- 1.6 Site/equipment preparation is completed in accordance with organisation policy and procedures, and Range Standing Orders.
2. Destroy unexploded ordnance
- 2.1 Unexploded ordnance and destruction means are prepared and tested in accordance with Range Standing Orders and organisation policy.
- 2.2 Unexploded ordnance is destroyed.
- 2.3 Emergency and contingency procedures are applied in accordance with organisation policy and Range Standing Orders.
- 2.4 Residue is inspected to ensure all items have been destroyed in accordance with Range Standing Orders.
3. Finalise the destruction process
- 3.1 Site/equipment is maintained and/or refurbished in accordance with organisation policy and procedures, and Range Standing Orders.
- 3.2 Documentation and records are maintained in accordance with statutory and organisation requirements.

This unit may be assessed with the following unit:

In a public safety environment assessment is usually conducted via direct observation in a training environment or in the workplace via subject matter supervision and/or mentoring, which is typically recorded in a competency workbook.
Assessment is completed using appropriately qualified assessors who select the most appropriate method of assessment.
Assessment may occur in an operational environment or in an industry-approved simulated work environment. Forms of assessment that are typically used include:
direct observation
interviewing the candidate
journals and workplace documentation
third party reports from supervisors
written or oral questions
