Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to plan and coordinate complex glazing installations. Complex installations involve planning and coordination with multiple other stakeholders and site personnel and include installations requiring advanced handling and installation techniques.This unit applies to experienced workers who interpret and use advanced technical information to develop solutions to potentially complex glass and glazing requirements. They commonly work independently and typically solve complex problems that require theoretical knowledge and experience about the specification, manufacture and installation of a wide range of glass and glazing products. Job roles commonly involve leadership and supervisorial responsibilities.Workers with this competency perform specialist or leadership functions in glass and glazing enterprises. They interpret contract documentation, develop a project schedule, coordinate resources, and communicate with a diverse range of site personnel to meet quality requirements.At the time of this unit’s release, the work described in this unit does not require licensing or certification, but state or territory authorities should be consulted to determine the current status. Workers on construction sites are required by law to complete induction training. They must also comply with relevant legislation, Australian Standards, codes and manufacturers’ installation instructions.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Determine installation requirements
  • 1.1 Identify the scope of works by analysing contract documentation
  • 1.2 Determine glazing installation requirements and timing in consultation with principal contractors, architects and engineers
  • 1.3 Determine and document internal and external human, physical and financial resource requirements according to the scope of works
  • 1.4 Identify and document site requirements and limitations
2. Plan the installation
  • 2.1 Develop an installation schedule to meet timeframes, sequence operations and allocate responsibilities in consultation with other building trades and contractors
  • 2.2 Define the critical path for the installation according to the installation schedule
  • 2.3 Organise the supply of resources from internal or external sources and record supply details
  • 2.4 Develop installation site and safety plans to coordinate with other building trades and contractors
  • 2.5 Obtain permits within the required time frames
  • 2.6 Monitor project time frames, and adjust them if necessary to account for other construction activity
3. Coordinate delivery and start-up
  • 3.1 Check and supervise onsite plant delivery and placement against the installation schedule and site and safety plans
  • 3.2 Schedule and monitor onsite human resource requirements according to the installation schedule, the scope of role and workplace procedures
  • 3.3 Support the effective coordination of installation activity through engagement with the construction work supervisor and other tradespeople
4. Coordinate on-site installation
  • 4.1 Monitor the quality and safety of work through ongoing communication with key site stakeholders and physical site inspections
  • 4.2 Monitor the work and performance of subcontracted plant operators and staff against agreed requirements
  • 4.3 Prepare site reports of supervisory inspections with any variation requests or requirements and communicate them to the appropriate people
  • 4.4 Complete administrative processes to meet regulatory and organisational requirements
5. Manage quality compliance
  • 5.1 Inspect and monitor site checklists, detailing specific items at appropriate stages
  • 5.2 Use industry and workplace quality manuals and procedures in managing the quality process with all quality requirements communicated to onsite personnel
  • 5.3 Check work against contractual quality standards and organise and check any required rectifications for completion
  • 5.4 Arrange and accurately document regulatory inspections of the completed installation
  • 5.5 Accurately complete final contract documentation according to job requirements and communicate to relevant personnel
