Description
This unit of competency describes the outcomes required to identify, sort and rack hardwood or softwood material in a forest products factory settings. The unit includes verification of material to ensure appropriate quality and separation of material with faults. The unit applies to Kiln Worker, Treatment Plant Worker, Sawmill Worker, Production Worker , Manufacturing Assistant (Timber Products) ,Timber Manufacturing Worker, Timber Products Worker, Timber Puller. No licensing, legislative, regulatory, or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to rack material
  • 1.1 Review work order and where required check with appropriate personnel.
  • 1.2 Identify type and quantity of material to be racked.
  • 1.3 Select appropriate personal protective and other equipment and check for operational effectiveness.
  • 1.4 Plan racking processes in line with work order.
2. Identify material
  • 2.1 Follow organisational safety procedures throughout all racking processes.
  • 2.2 Identify requirements for standard diameter ranges of round poles by visual estimate or use of a measuring tool.
  • 2.3 Identify requirements for standard cross sections of sawn or dressed boards by visual estimate or use of a measuring tool.
  • 2.4 Identify requirements for standard lengths of material by visual estimate or use of a measuring tool
  • 2.5 Identify and interpret stress grade labels, colour identification marks and other tags
3. Rack material
  • 3.1 Check bearers for consistent thickness and damage and dispose of substandard ones.
  • 3.2 Place bearers and spacing sticks squarely, evenly and consistently.
  • 3.3 Rack material in line with work order and organisational safety procedures.
  • 3.4 Rack material of consistent type, cross section, length or diameter.
  • 3.5 Identify, separate and dispose of faulty material in line with environmental protection practices.
  • 3.6 Clear work area regularly to maintain a safe and efficient workflow.
  • 3.7 Record and report processes and equipment faults to appropriate personnel.
