Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to incorporate artistic expression into basic dance performances under the supervision of experienced dancers and dance teachers.This unit applies to persons with some practical experience dancing with a partner or as members of a group in any dance style or genre. Performances would usually be for small audiences.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Rehearse basic dance techniques
- 1.1 Observe safe dance practices, including warm-up and warm-down exercises before and after dance activities
- 1.2 Demonstrate elements of dance sequences when rehearsing for performances
- 1.3 Apply memory-retention skills when rehearsing dance sequences
- 1.4 Incorporate knowledge of musicality and phrasing into dance rehearsals
- 1.5 Use dance or performance space appropriately in dance sequences
- 1.6 Follow direction from relevant personnel
- 1.7 Seek feedback from others about ways to improve basic dance techniques
2. Develop expressive techniques
- 2.1 Take the origin and characteristics of the chosen dance style into account when experimenting with expressive techniques
- 2.2 Develop an appreciation of the basic concepts of aesthetics in dance
- 2.3 Demonstrate correct posture and body alignment appropriate to the dance technique and movement
- 2.4 Demonstrate isolation and coordination of the upper and lower body in simple movement sequences
- 2.5 Apply a range of techniques that integrate balance, flexibility, coordination, weight transfer and control and articulation of individual body parts
- 2.6 Seek feedback from others about ways to improve incorporating artistic expression into basic dance performances
3. Perform basic dance techniques
- 3.1 Interpret and apply knowledge of a range of performance characteristics
- 3.2 Apply memory retention skills, control and finesse when combining dance techniques in performances
- 3.3 Maintain concentration and focus during performances
- 3.4 Ensure performances are characterised by the expressive use of movement dynamics
- 3.5 Adjust performances to the scale and nature of venues
- 3.6 Incorporate musicality and phrasing throughout performances
- 3.7 Apply individual artistic, interpretative and expressive qualities to performances
- 3.8 Seek feedback from others about ways to improve performing basic dance sequences
