Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to protect and maintain the safety and welfare of people in immigration detention.It requires the ability to recognise potential vulnerabilities and needs of people in immigration detention, encourage them to participate in activities, and report concerns about their physical and emotional condition. The unit applies to staff working in immigration detention as Authorised Officers under the Migration Act (Cth).The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, organisation policies and procedures and industry codes of practice. When a person is in immigration detention or is being removed from Australia, Officers must observe applicable International laws and conventions. Statutory/legislative requirements apply to this unit and may vary across states and territories. Users are required to check with the relevant jurisdiction for current requirements.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Establish a safe environment for people in immigration detention
  • 1.1 Treat people in immigration detention ethically and humanely to ensure their personal dignity, safety, welfare and individual rights are protected
  • 1.2 Recognise vulnerabilities of a person in immigration detention and address in accordance with workplace policy and procedures
  • 1.3 Provide people in immigration detention with safety and security information and briefings prior to any activity
2 Monitor the care of people in Immigration detention
  • 2.1 Identify needs and welfare requirements of a person in immigration detention and accurately record details in the required format and time frame in accordance with workplace policy and procedures
  • 2.2 Check supervision and care provided to a person in immigration detention aligns with individual plans and security procedures
  • 2.3 Review, revise and update individual plans in accordance with workplace policy and procedure
  • 2.4 Report immediate concerns about the physical and emotional condition of a person in immigration detention in accordance with workplace policy and procedures
3 Encourage people in Immigration detention to participate in positive programs and activities
  • 3.1 Identify preferred activities and interests for people in immigration detention and record in the individual plans
  • 3.2 Promote programs that provide meaning and purpose to people in immigration detention while in detention
  • 3.3 Maintain relevant records in accordance with workplace policies and procedures
  • 3.4 Report concerns regarding change in behaviour or lack of participation in activities to appropriate personnel
