Description
This unit of competency specifies the skills and knowledge required to assess the construction of existing buildings and new building works to ensure provisions for access. It includes identifying and evaluating construction methods to ensure compliance with access building legislation and identifying alternative approaches to construction to meet required provisions for access.This unit is for individuals who are self-directed and have substantial depth of knowledge and skills to make independent judgements in the provision of access consulting services.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Research building project compliance with building planning legislation for building access.
- 1.1 Interpret plans, working drawings and specifications for building project to determine access requirements.
- 1.2 Interpret effects of planning and construction legislation and communicate to relevant persons throughout design and construction of the building project.
- 1.3 Research and document the effects of state and territory legislation, local government and service supply authorities on design and construction for the provision of access.
- 1.4 Evaluate and document methods of construction and methods of classification as described by the National Construction Code (NCC).
2 Identify and record relevant planning and construction information.
- 2.1 Identify building planning and construction information for project and record using appropriate industry terminology and symbols.
- 2.2 Record all salient features of construction site relevant to access and required to prepare design and construction documents.
3 Investigate and evaluate site for construction of accessible building.
- 3.1 Identify and evaluate types and principles of construction relevant to accessible building design and construction.
- 3.2 Review structural systems commonly used in buildings to identify those relevant to the construction site.
4 Inspect construction site at appropriate intervals.
- 4.1 Obtain and interpret project plan according to workplace requirements.
- 4.2 Identify and document trade sequencing points appropriate to the provision of access within building.
- 4.3 Negotiate with relevant persons to gain access to construction site according to workplace requirements.
- 4.4 Inspect construction at appropriate trade sequencing points according to workplace requirements.
5 Evaluate construction standards and practices for access compliance.
- 5.1 Identify and evaluate standards and practices for building claddings, linings, finishes and coatings.
- 5.2 Identify and evaluate standards and practices for fabrication and installation of building windows, doors and joinery.
- 5.3 Identify and evaluate basic principles and integration of building services into building.
- 5.4 Identify and evaluate structural principles of loads, forces, stresses and strains applied in the design and construction of buildings.
- 5.5 Identify and evaluate construction standards and practices for the installation of building services.
- 5.6 Identify and evaluate construction relating to stairs, balustrades and handrails.
- 5.7 Evaluate alternative approaches to construction for access according to regulatory requirements.
