Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to manage security.It includes the skills required to ensure compliance with security procedures, maintain the safety and security of staff and/or offenders and maintain safety and security documentation.This unit applies to those working with offenders/detainees/staff in prisons, secure custodial centres and community facilities under custodial supervision, with responsibility for managing security matters.An individual undertaking this role works independently, drawing upon support from a range of established resources. The role requires complex task organisation, analysis and decision making skills. Working as part of a coordinated team is integral to the role.Statutory/legislative requirements apply to this unit and may vary across states and territories. Users are required to check with the relevant jurisdiction for current requirements before undertaking this unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Ensure compliance with security procedures
- 1.1 Identify all security and emergency procedures relevant to own work role
- 1.2 Oversee implementation of relevant security procedures according to the level of risk
- 1.3 Provide instruction to work group on potential security risks
- 1.4 Report potential breaches of security and/or equipment faults to appropriate authority
2 Maintain safety and security of staff and/or offenders
- 2.1 Maintain dynamic security actions by ensuring regular and consistent interaction with offenders or staff and sharing of information and observations as appropriate
- 2.2 Ensure security functions and activities relating to the care and wellbeing of offenders are implemented
- 2.3 Respond to security breaches involving staff or offenders
3 Maintain safety and security documentation
- 3.1 Participate in the routine review of security procedures and responses according to own level of responsibility
- 3.2 Complete security documentation in accordance with organisational procedures
- 3.3 Manage security files in accordance with organisational procedures
