Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to prepare an inventory of natural systems, assess threats and opportunities, and develop and implement strategies to conserve and re-establish natural systems for specific locations and systems appropriate to outdoor programs and activities.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare an inventory of natural systems.
- 1.1. Identify natural systems and their components within relevant outdoor programs and activities.
- 1.2. Identify and review existing data sources on the natural systems to enable analysis of the systems’ characteristics.
- 1.3. Assess the significance of natural systems according to relevant legislation and organisational policies and procedures.
- 1.4. Prepare and document an inventory of natural systems.
2. Assess threats and opportunities.
- 2.1. Identify threats and opportunities for the conservation and re-establishment of natural systems.
- 2.2. Prioritise threats and opportunities according to relevant classification system.
3. Develop strategies to conserve and re-establish natural systems.
- 3.1. Identify and assess the effectiveness of comparable methods and strategies of conservation in practice elsewhere.
- 3.2. Determine and select strategies to conserve and re-establish natural systems in consultation with stakeholders.
- 3.3. Identify and access resources to support the achievement of required outcomes of strategies.
- 3.4. Develop alternative and innovative approaches to the conservation and re-establishment of natural systems, where appropriate, to meet local requirements.
4. Implement strategies.
- 4.1. Identify and assess training required to support implementation.
- 4.2. Prepare and distribute material to community to provide information about the strategy.
- 4.3. Apply techniques for the conservation and re-establishment of natural systems.
- 4.4. Trial and assess innovative and alternative techniques.

5. Evaluate strategies.
- 5.1. Seek feedback from stakeholders and the community.

Evidence of the ability to:
undertake research, planning and consultation to develop, implement and evaluate strategies to conserve and re-establish natural systems for a specific location or area in accordance with organisation policies and procedures and legislative requirements
support conservation by identifying staff training needs and preparing community information materials.
Context of and specific resources for assessment
Assessment must ensure:
conservation and re-establishment of a natural system reflecting local requirements which is of sufficient breadth to demonstrate competency and consistency of performance.
Assessment must also ensure access to:
an area or location containing natural systems or components of these
resources and information relevant to the natural system
relevant information impacting on conservation of natural systems
relevant stakeholders.
Method of assessment
A range of assessment methods should be used to assess practical skills and knowledge. The following examples are appropriate for this unit:
review of authentic conservation strategy showing evidence of consultation, implementation and review
oral and or written questioning to assess knowledge of natural systems and interrelationships between their components
portfolio containing evidence of research and consultation processes to compile an inventory of natural systems
third-party reports from a supervisor detailing appropriate work performed by the individual.
