A number of tree valuation systems have been developed and recommended by various professional arboricultural bodies.

What evidence is required to demonstrate competence for this standard as a whole?Competence in assessing trees requires evidence that trees have been assessed to industry standards, tree reports have been prepared, and that appropriate recommendations have been made to clients for action. The skills and knowledge required to assess trees must be transferable to a range of work environments and contexts. For example, this could include different types of trees in different workplace contexts.

Knowledge and understanding are essential to apply this standard in the workplace, to transfer the skills to other contexts, and to deal with unplanned events. The knowledge requirements for this unit are listed below:

principles and methods of identifying tree species and cultivars
indications of instability, decay, damage and stress in trees and their possible causes
principles and methods of determining tree heights
application of current tree valuation formulae
legal requirements relating to the proximity of trees to buildings, services and access routes
local tree protection and preservation laws.

What specific skills are needed to achieve the performance criteria?

To achieve the performance criteria, some complementary skills are required. These skills include the ability to:

identify trees
identify signs of stress of ill health in trees
value trees
measure tree height and condition
record data and prepare written reports.
