Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to inspect and report on embankment dam safety.It includes preparing for and implementing dam safety visual inspections, reporting on conditions, faults in embankment dams and appurtenant structures. It also includes initiating emergency plans.This unit applies to those with responsibility for the inspection of embankment dams and reporting of faults or trends. Those undertaking this unit would work under appropriate supervision while performing routine tasks in range of familiar contexts.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare forembankment dam inspection
  • 1.1 Identify and apply organisational requirements relating to embankment dam safety inspection
  • 1.2 Identify features of embankment dam types and its application to inspected dams
  • 1.3 Identify embankment dam behaviour under a range of conditions
  • 1.4 Gather and validate checklists, previous inspection reports and relevant data
  • 1.5 Schedule activities and gather appropriate equipment for embankment dam inspection according to workplace procedures
2 Inspect and assess the condition of embankment dams
  • 2.1 Implement embankment dam visual inspection procedures and practices including for unusual events
  • 2.2 Inspect and assess the condition and performance of embankment dams
  • 2.3 Recognise, record and assess failure indicators and changes in the condition of the embankment dam and appurtenant structures
3 Report the condition of embankment dams
  • 3.1 Collect and record evidence to determine the extent of changes in conditions
  • 3.2 Prepare and submit reports to relevant personnel according to workplace procedures
4 Activate emergency plans
  • 4.1 Determine if faults and changes trigger a dam safety incident
  • 4.2 Initiate and follow emergency plan according to workplace procedures
