This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to generate ideas for and compose a range of musical pieces using music technology, music equipment and software.The unit applies to those who apply well developed skills in aural perception and harmony and who use technology-based equipment and software to create music.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to create musical pieces using music technology
- 1.1 Clarify scope of brief with required personnel and negotiate contract as required
- 1.2 Analyse recordings of music composed by others using electronic media and generate ideas in relation to own composition
- 1.3 Brief other people involved in composition project as required
- 1.4 Test different musical ideas and starting points using features of electronic media and software and test options for realising them
- 1.5 Investigate potential of basic structural elements for achieving desired effect in musical piece and refine ideas with required personnel
- 1.6 Prepare a plan for completing work in line with requirements of brief
- 1.7 Identify criteria for measuring success of own composition
2. Create musical pieces using music technology
- 2.1 Organise musical elements into working versions of musical piece using equipment safely
- 2.2 Apply different compositional and digital audio workstation techniques to musical elements
- 2.3 Listen to work in progress with required personnel and seek feedback on creative and technical aspects of musical piece
- 2.4 Adjust composition as required
- 2.5 Incorporate ideas and suggestions into final composition
- 2.6 Apply copyright notice to musical piece according to industry procedures
3. Present and evaluate own musical compositions
- 3.1 Save, export and present musical piece in required file format and within required timeframe
- 3.2 Compare work against existing compositions and assess development of techniques and ideas
- 3.3 Seek feedback on composition from required personnel and identify strategies for improving own skills in composing music using electronic media
- 3.4 Apply copyright notice to finalised musical work as required
- 3.5 Present musical piece within required timeframe
