Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to conduct single energy source isolation procedures for permits to work.Apermit to worksystem is a formal method used to control certain types of workthat can be potentially hazardous. Apermit to workspecifies theworkto be completed, the precautions to be taken and the timeframe for completion.Competency in this unit requires the ability to plan and prepare for isolation, de-isolation and restoration, perform isolation and perform de-isolation and restoration. Individuals will, in general, work as an operator in a power generation facility.Power generation plant operators are trained and authorised to isolate, prepare plant and issue permits to work.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Plan and prepare for single energy source isolation
  • 1.1 Work requirements, including permits to work, are identified from relevant personnel and site inspection in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 1.2 Work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) regulations, legislative requirements, codes of practice, manufacturers’ recommendations and specifications, environmental requirements and workplace procedures are identified, applied and monitored
  • 1.3 Materials, tools, equipment and resources are obtained and inspected in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 1.4 Isolation work is sequenced in accordance with permit requirements and workplace procedures
  • 1.5 Isolation work is prioritised in accordance with permit requirements and workplace procedures
  • 1.6 Permit to work is coordinated with other personnel involved in, and affected by isolations in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 1.7 Personnel participating in work are briefed, with roles and responsibilities confirmed, in accordance with workplace procedures
2 Perform single energy sourceisolation
  • 2.1 Single energy source to be isolated is identified in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 2.2 Isolation is performed in accordance with permit requirements and workplace procedures
  • 2.3 Isolation, dissipation and restraint of energy sources is verified in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 2.4 Isolation is confirmed in accordance with workplace procedures
3 Perform single energy source de-isolation and restoration
  • 3.1 Single energy source de-isolation and restorations are performed in accordance with permit requirements and workplace procedures
