Description
This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to identify the characteristics of a site and evaluate existing structures and materials for their bushfire resilience. It includes applying regulatory frameworks and the National Construction Code (NCC), to assess and recommend improvements to improve resilience in bushfire prone areas.The unit applies to individuals who are paraprofessional workers and have technical and theoretical knowledge of bushfire impact on property developments. They demonstrate autonomy, judgement and responsibility in a range of contexts within broad but established parameters. They possess communication and analytical skills to determine and transmit solutions to complex problems.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare for on-site assessment.
  • 1.1 Determine scope of consultation and prepare brief for client.
  • 1.2 Locate site from maps and arrange site visit.
  • 1.3 Access and review regional bushfire management plan for site location.
  • 1.4 Access and review Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) rating for site.
  • 1.5 Access and review legislation, codes of practice and standards relevant to site and structures for bushfire prone areas.
  • 1.6 Identify health and safety hazards, assess risk and implement controls for site visit according to workplace procedures.
2 Assess existing site and structures for bushfire resilience.
  • 2.1 Identify key structures on site for assessment according to client brief.
  • 2.2 Inspect site and key structures and document observations.
  • 2.3 Determine structure design and construction materials subject to legislative frameworks for bushfire prone areas.
  • 2.4 Assess characteristics of structures and materials for compliance with legislative frameworks for bushfire risk.
  • 2.5 Identify non-compliance of structures and materials with current legislative frameworks.
  • 2.6 Document deficiencies of structures and materials for bushfire resilience.
3 Determine options and recommendations for improved bushfire resilience.
  • 3.1 Identify options for site and structures to improve bushfire resilience.
  • 3.2 Assess options and select most appropriate for site and structures within constraints of client brief and according to legislative framework.
  • 3.3 Determine recommended improvements to structures for increased bushfire resilience.
  • 3.4 Assess options and select most appropriate bushfire mitigation measures for site.
4 Prepare report and present to client.
  • 4.1 Compile assessments and recommendations into a report according to client brief.
  • 4.2 Present report with recommendations to client and seek feedback.
  • 4.3 Review and respond to feedback from client.
  • 4.4 Review and amend report and recommendations according to client feedback.
  • 4.5 Finalise report and distribute to client.
