Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to apply experimental processes to create different effects on fibres, fabrics and other materials and produce original textiles in response to a design brief. The design and subsequent calculations and pattern development may be created manually or by using computer-aided design (CAD) programs. This unit applies to textile designers. No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.
Notes
Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Develop ideas for exploration
  • 1.1 Identify design parameters from brief
  • 1.2 Generate and explore design ideas through research and experimentation
  • 1.3 Select ideas for further exploration based on their potential to respond to the brief
2. Manipulate materials
  • 2.1 Identify materials and manipulation techniques to achieve desired effects
  • 2.2 Identify processes and materials required to achieve manipulations
  • 2.3 Source materials and select and prepare tools and equipment required for production
  • 2.4 Use manipulation techniques to achieve required design effects
  • 2.5 Use experimentation to refine effects
  • 2.6 Identify material or process faults and determine and address probable cause
3. Evaluate outcomes of manipulation
  • 3.1 Assess manipulated textile sample against design concept
  • 3.2 Analyse and evaluate design and manipulation techniques to identify opportunities for improvement
