Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to select oil-based and emulsion wax coating systems appropriate for the job, prepare for the work and apply the selected coatings to timber and parquetry floors.Workers with this competency undertake routine tasks on residential and non-residential/commercial sites according to job instructions and workplace procedures using discretion, judgement and problem-solving to identify and resolve routine issues. They work with a high degree of self-direction under routine supervision, and they are responsible for their output.The work described in this unit may require a licence or certification in some jurisdictions, and state or territory authorities should be consulted to determine the current status. Workers on construction sites are required by law to complete induction training. They must also comply with relevant legislation, regulations, Australian Standards, codes and manufacturer installation instructions.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Prepare to apply emulsion wax and oil-based coating systems
- 1.1 Interpret coating requirements from job and manufacturer instructions and calculate the quantities of materials required
- 1.2 Identify hazards relating to the work site, work practices, materials, tools and equipment, and check risk treatments are in place and operating including systems to ventilate chemical fumes and to meet environmental protection requirements
- 1.3 Select and check all required tools and equipment are ready to use, and organise to fix any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
- 1.4 Plan the work sequence to ensure efficient, quality application
- 1.5 Select coating materials considering the job instructions, the qualities of the materials, and their compatibility with each other and with the surface to be coated
- 1.6 Check the coating materials meet quality requirements and are prepared and ready for use according to the manufacturer instructions, product labels, safety data sheets and workplace procedures
- 1.7 Confirm the surface to be coated is clean and suitable for coating, and fix or report any deficiencies according to workplace procedures
- 1.8 Erect signage and/or barricades around the area to be coated according to workplace procedures
2. Apply the coating
- 2.1 Apply coating material according to the manufacturer instructions, product labels, safety data sheets and workplace procedures
- 2.2 Reapply coating material as required according to the recommended time between coats
- 2.3 Buff and sand between coats according to manufacturer instructions
- 2.4 Check the floor is coated correctly according to job instructions and quality requirements, and fix any deficiencies
- 2.5 Provide floor maintenance instructions and warranty provisions to the client according to workplace procedures
3. Complete the task according to workplace procedures
- 3.1 Clean up the work area, identify items for recycling and dispose of waste
- 3.2 Identify, tag and report any damage to equipment and tools
- 3.3 Check, clean and do routine maintenance on equipment and tools and store them and unused materials
- 3.4 Complete task outcome documentation
