Description
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to perform down the wire duties in compliance with relevant regulatory requirements of the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) and national operating standards.It includes preparing for, responding to, performing and concluding winching operations. It also includes assessing winch sites and developing winch plans.This unit addresses aviation technical skill requirements (physical, mental and task-management abilities) related to aircraft operational duties of flight crew and contributes to safe and effective performance in complex aviation operational environments.Operations are conducted across a variety of operational contexts within the Australian aviation industry.Licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements are applicable to this unit.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare and respond for winching operations
- 1.1 Operation and task information is obtained from communications centre, briefing from supervisor or other sources
- 1.2 Winching equipment and resources are identified and selected based on task information received
- 1.3 Personal protective equipment is selected and checked based on the nature of the winching operation in accordance with workplace procedures
- 1.4 Anticipated situational and environmental hazards are discussed with crew members and incorporated into the winch plan
- 1.5 Personnel to be winched are briefed as required
2 Assess winch site
- 2.1 Risk assessment on situational and environmental hazards is conducted and control measures applied to ensure safety of self and others
- 2.2 Additional personnel or specialist equipment is requested as required for winching operations
3 Develop winch plan
- 3.1 Winch equipment and techniques suitable to the environment are identified
- 3.2 Personal capabilities and limitations of self and other team members are considered in the development of the winching plan
- 3.3 Primary and alternate winch plans are developed based on situational risk assessment
4 Perform winch operations
- 4.1 Communication with team members is maintained during winching operation in accordance with workplace procedures
- 4.2 Position of winching personnel are managed throughout operation
- 4.3 Winching equipment and personnel are managed in normal and abnormal winching situations in accordance with workplace procedures
- 4.4 Personnel are secured in aircraft in accordance with workplace procedures
- 4.5 Alternate winch plans are implemented when required
5 Conclude winch operations
- 5.1 Equipment is recovered, cleaned and maintained in accordance with manufacturer guidelines and workplace procedures
- 5.2 Debrief is conducted in accordance with workplace procedures
- 5.3 Post-flight documentation is completed in accordance with workplace procedures
