Description
This unit specifies the skills and knowledge required to undertake recovery of broken down vehicles and equipment, requiring the operation of specialist recovery vehicles and equipment.It includes preparing for recovery vehicle tasks, dispatching the recovery vehicle to an incident site, retrieving disabled equipment and moving it to a place of repair. It also includes transporting disabled equipment and finalising recovery tasks.This unit does not cover the extraction of disabled equipment by winching techniques, which is covered by DEFVEH002 Extract disabled equipment using winching techniques in a field environment.The skills and knowledge described in this unit must be applied within the legislative, regulatory and policy environment in which they are carried out. Organisational policies and procedures must be consulted and adhered to.Persons undertaking this unit lead a small team to recover vehicles and equipment. Specialist recovery vehicles and equipment includes towing, lifting and winching equipment.Persons must be capable of assessing recovery situations in remote environments and tasking personnel to complete operations in isolation from supervision or support.No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare for recovery tasks
  • 1.1 Obtain and confirm orders and instructions
  • 1.2 Check and prepare recovery vehicle and equipment for deployment in accordance with organisational procedures
  • 1.3 Confirm and organise resources required for operational tasks
  • 1.4 Brief recovery crew about task in accordance with organisational procedures
  • 1.5 Report identified problems/shortfalls to appropriate personnel in accordance with organisational procedures so corrective action can occur prior to deployment
  • 1.6 Apply work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) requirements and recognised safety precautions throughout the operation in accordance with organisational procedures
  • 1.7 Identify, assess and implement environmentally sustainable work practices, as required
2 Deploy recovery equipment
  • 2.1 Deploy recovery vehicle to recovery site in accordance with organisational procedures
  • 2.2 Communicate effectively with relevant vehicle recovery activity stakeholders to ensure everyone is aware of recovery procedures
3 Recover disabled equipment
  • 3.1 Diagnose equipment casualty faults, where possible, to ensure efficient and cost effective recovery actions
  • 3.2 Assess recovery situation in accordance with organisational procedures to determine appropriate recovery method
  • 3.3 Assess safety risks associated with recovery task and implement control measures to ensure a safe working environment in accordance with organisational procedures
  • 3.4 Brief on-site personnel, allocate tasks and supervise personnel in accordance with organisational procedures
  • 3.5 Complete recovery tasks in accordance with organisational procedures
  • 3.6 Respond to minor unplanned situations in accordance with organisational procedures, in a manner that minimises risk to personnel and equipment
  • 3.7 Report major incidents outside scope of vehicle recovery team capability to appropriate personnel
4 Transport disabled equipment
  • 4.1 Secure disabled equipment to recovery vehicle in accordance with manufacturer instructions and organisational procedures
  • 4.2 Assess the stability and braking capability of recovery vehicle to ensure it is safe to transport disabled equipment
  • 4.3 Drive recovery vehicle to maintenance facility
  • 4.4 Manage unplanned incidents as they occur in accordance with organisational procedures
5 Finalise recovery tasks
  • 5.1 Hand over equipment casualty to owner or recover further, as required
  • 5.2 Complete documentation, including reports and returns, in accordance with organisational procedures
  • 5.3 Supervise and conduct maintenance in accordance with organisational procedures
  • 5.4 Report faulty equipment and take corrective actions, as required
  • 5.5 Debrief recovery crew as required, in accordance with organisational procedures
