Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to evaluate the impact on sustainability arising from a defined section of a work area or process and recommend improvements. This unit applies to the evaluation of a section of a value chain that is totally within the boundaries of a selected work area or process in order to identify its broad sustainability impacts and make recommendations for mitigating negative sustainability impacts.This unit applies to team leaders, maintenance staff, technicians, managers and others who have some responsibility for the sustainability outcomes of a team and/or work area.This unit applies to any organisation. No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Define the work area or process to be evaluated
- 1.1 Identify the boundaries of the process or work area to be evaluated
- 1.2 Identify all process steps within the boundaries
- 1.3 Identify the change which occurs at each step
- 1.4 Define sustainability interactions at each step
2. Determine impacts on sustainability from the work area or process
- 2.1 Identify organisation’s sustainability goals as they relate to the process or work area
- 2.2 Identify sustainability sensitivities at each step in the process or work area
- 2.3 Identify sustainability issues at each step in the process or work area
- 2.4 Estimate the sustainability impact of sensitivities and issues identified
- 2.5 Short-list sustainability issues and/or sensitivities with probable high negative impact
3. Recommend changes to reduce negative sustainability impact
- 3.1 Determine root cause of each short-listed item
- 3.2 Determine possible solutions to root causes and alternative mitigation strategies
- 3.3 Estimate resources required for solution and mitigation options
- 3.4 Rank solution and mitigation options by desirability
- 3.5 Recommend preferred options in accordance with organisational procedures and protocols
