Description
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to use digital technologies for estimating garment yields for costing. It involves translating graded pattern pieces onto a cutting lay plan to minimise fabric waste and optimise cutting accuracy. This unit applies to patternmakers who work in accordance with existing specifications using discretion, judgement and problem solving to achieve work outcomes. No licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.
Notes
Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Determine yield from fabric
  • 1.1 Examine garment measurements and identify marker requirements from specifications
  • 1.2 Determine the impact of fabric features and specifications on marker
  • 1.3 Identify pattern and style requirements and size ratio, and estimate material utilisation
  • 1.4 Select and prepare suitable software programs and computing equipment
  • 1.5 Access pattern/style libraries and enter accurate fabric and sizing information
  • 1.6 Use software features to generate an order for marker
  • 1.7 Determine optimal layout configuration to minimise fabric waste
  • 1.8 Ensure lay requirements meet design specifications
  • 1.9 Confirm garment yield from fabric
2. Prepare costing markers
  • 2.1 Generate digital costing marker using appropriate software features
  • 2.2 Determine preliminary costing from market information and assess commercial viability of production
  • 2.3 Identify and action need for adjustments to improve viability
  • 2.4 Create marker that maximises material utilisation
  • 2.5 Determine accurate piece count, marker length and fabric utilisation
  • 2.6 Ensure measurements and requested specifications are accurately documented
  • 2.7 Create a digital copy of scaled marker and assess against design and production specifications
3. Prepare marker for use
  • 3.1 Prepare marker for distribution
  • 3.2 Store marker according to workplace procedures
  • 3.4 Create digital copy of final scaled marker and prepare for processing and costing
