Description
This unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to apply the principles of cardiovascular nursing care to provide comprehensive nursing care and maintain a person’s optimal cardiovascular health.Enrolled nurses working in cardiovascular nursing hold and apply specialised in-depth knowledge, integrate theory and practice, and make reliable clinical assessments and judgements.This unit applies to enrolled nurses, registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), seeking specialisation in enrolled nurse work that is carried out in consultation and collaboration with registered nurses, and under direct or indirect supervisory arrangements aligned to the NMBA regulatory authority legislative requirements.The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian Standards and industry codes of practice.No occupational licensing, certification or specific legislative requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Contribute to multidisciplinary health care team in caring for a person with cardiovascular condition.
- 1.1 Contribute information to nursing plan of care that reflects nursing needs and includes nursing actions to maximise cardiovascular function and minimise potential complications.
- 1.2 Identify role of specialist nursing and medical services in dealing with cardiovascular conditions and work within that context.
- 1.3 Identify factors relevant to the health situation, including physical, psychological, social and economic impacts.
- 1.4 Review clinical data collected and monitor cardiovascular condition.
- 1.5 Communicate to multidisciplinary health care team members.
2. Perform nursing interventions in the cardiovascular health care setting.
- 2.1 Prioritise nursing interventions according to person’s needs.
- 2.2 Undertake pre-, intra- and post diagnostic procedures in line with scope of practice and organisational policies and procedures.
- 2.3 Participate in risk identification, assessment and management processes.
- 2.4 Apply decision-making framework to modify nursing interventions and use problem-solving approaches in response to changes in condition.
- 2.5 Identify where acuity of a person exceeds own knowledge, skill and assessed competence and consult with multidisciplinary health care team.
- 2.6 Administer prescribed emergency medication based on principles of drug actions and in accordance with organisational policies and procedures and own scope of enrolled nursing practice.
- 2.7 Make nursing care proposals in consultation with registered nurse to promote improved outcomes for the condition.
3. Evaluate effectiveness of nursing interventions and planned support for continuing self-care.
- 3.1 Evaluate nursing interventions and identified outcomes against evidence-based best practice in cardiovascular nursing care.
- 3.2 Identify responses of the person, families and carers to nursing interventions and their understanding of ongoing management of cardiovascular impairment.
- 3.3 Identify opportunities to provide information on available community resources and how to access them.
- 3.4 Assess, prior to discharge, the person’s understanding of their cardiovascular condition, medications, therapeutic regimes and follow up care required.
