This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to service and handover plant and machines in Coal and Metalliferous mining and Extractive.This unit is appropriate for those working in operational roles.No licensing, legislation or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Plan and prepare for service and handover plant and machines
  • 1.1 Access, interpret and apply all service and maintenance documentation and ensure the work activity is compliant
  • 1.2 Obtain, read, interpret, clarify and confirm work requirements
  • 1.3 Identify and address potential risks, hazards and environmental issues, and implement control measures
  • 1.4 Select and wear appropriate personal protective equipment for the work activity
  • 1.5 Obtain permits required to carry out work from authorised personnel
  • 1.6 Identify and obtain replacement parts and service tools
  • 1.7 Inspect working area to determine appropriate path of movement for loads and equipment/vehicles
  • 1.8 Maintain cleanliness of the servicing area
2. Assess and secure plant/machine
  • 2.1 Conduct external checks of plant/machine
  • 2.2 Secure plant/machine and inspect attachments for defects
  • 2.3 Carry out pre-operational and post start-up equipment checks
  • 2.4 Report defects and damage
3. Service, maintain and repair plant/machine
  • 3.1 Communicate and coordinate activities with others throughout the work activity
  • 3.2 Operate service/maintenance equipment
  • 3.3 Conduct servicing or maintenance of plant/machine
  • 3.4 Apply procedures for the disposal of used oil and lubricant
  • 3.5 Maintain servicing schedule and/or records
4. Test plant/machine operational functions under load
  • 4.1 Ensure safety of personnel and avoidance of damage to plant/machine and environment while testing the plant/machine under load
  • 4.2 Shift material using appropriate equipment
  • 4.3 Assess weight of test load in compliance with equipment load plate specifications
  • 4.4 Apply control levers to ensure safe and effective operation of equipment
  • 4.5 Maintain speed of machine to safe operating and site limits
  • 4.6 Place test load to ensure stability of materials
  • 4.7 Identify and respond to hazardous and emergency situations
5. Shutdown plant/machine and secure site
  • 5.1 Park plant/machine to avoid machine and site hazards
  • 5.2 Conduct shut-down and isolate vehicle
  • 5.3 Return plant/machine to service
  • 5.4 Complete post-operational checks and handover documentation
