DescriptorThis competency unit describes the skills and knowledge required by Enrolled/Division 2 Nurses, in consultation/collaboration with other members of the health care team, to provide nursing interventions for clients with sexual and reproductive health care needs

Elements and Performance Criteria
1. Interpret the impact of sexual and reproductive health on a client and/or their family
- 1.1 Work with an understanding of the historical development of sexual and reproductive health strategies
- 1.2 Acknowledge the global context of sexual and reproductive health
- 1.3 Acknowledge the impact of population on service delivery and access
- 1.4 Assist clients to access relevant screening programs
- 1.5 Identify signs and symptoms of male/female reproductive health conditions
- 1.6 Identify signs and symptoms of sexually transmitted and reproductive tract infections
- 1.7 Identify the impact of sexual and reproductive conditions on activities of daily living
2. Contribute to team planning for sexual or reproductive health care
- 2.1 Determine the client's level of individual sexual development
- 2.2 Identify specific effects of culture, ageing, disability and illness on sexuality and sexual behaviour for each client
- 2.3 Use contemporary assessment tools accurately
- 2.4 Use a problem-solving framework to plan appropriate management strategies
- 2.5 Liaise with and utilise appropriate resources and service providers
3. Perform clinical nursing interventions
- 3.1 Incorporate contemporary sexual and reproductive health strategies into practice
- 3.2 Educate the client and/or family on sexual health and reproductive health strategies
- 3.3 Act as a resource for clients and staff
- 3.4 Assist with nursing interventions
4. Assist to evaluate the outcomes of planned nursing actions
- 4.1 Document client responses to interventions and report to appropriate personnel
- 4.2 Contribute to the evaluation of sexual and reproductive health strategies
5. Address contemporary issues in sexual and reproductive health
- 5.1 Identify and address factors affecting individual choice of contraception methods
- 5.2 Identify and address pregnancy choices and options for unplanned pregnancies
- 5.3 Provide education on risk taking behaviours and the promotion of safe sex practices as part of clinical practices

The evidence guide provides advice on assessment and must be read in conjunction with the Performance Criteria, Required Skills and Knowledge, the Range Statement and the Assessment Guidelines for this Training Package.
Critical aspects for assessment and evidence required to demonstrate this competency unit:
The individual being assessed must provide evidence of specified essential knowledge as well as skills
Observation of performance in a work context is essential for assessment of this unit
Consistency of performance should be demonstrated over the required range of workplace situations and should occur on more than one occasion and be assessed by a registered nurse
Context of and specific resources for assessment:
This unit is most appropriately assessed in the clinical workplace or in a simulated clinical work environment and under the normal range of clinical environment conditions prior to assessment in the workplace
Where, for reasons of safety, access to equipment and resources and space, assessment takes place away from the workplace, simulations should be used to represent workplace conditions as closely as possible
