Elements and Performance Criteria
1 Prepare to communicate with others
  • 1.1 Work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) procedures are followed
  • 1.2 Radios including portable radios and other communication equipment are checked prior to mooring and unmooring in accordance with workplace procedures
  • 1.3 Batteries are checked to confirm they are operational and fully charged in accordance with manufacturers’ specifications
  • 1.4 Radios and portable radios are set to operate on channels required for mooring and unmooring and confirmed as functioning correctly in accordance with workplace procedures and manufacturers’ specifications
  • 1.5 Workplace procedures and risk assessments are identified and accessed as required
  • 1.6 Faulty equipment is reported, tagged out and replaced following workplace procedures
2 Communicate with others
  • 2.1 Methods used to communicate with crews on vessels are in accordance with workplace procedures and international hand signals
  • 2.2 Clear and concise communication is used, and appropriate action is taken to confirm others have interpreted the communication correctly
  • 2.3 Radio communication is conducted in accordance with workplace procedures and Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP) protocols
  • 2.4 Safety concerns and risks are promptly and clearly communicated to pilot and mooring team prior to and during, mooring operations
  • 2.5 Due care is taken when using radio communication equipment, so as not to interfere with operational communication between tug crews and pilot of vessel
